Some people might think that they can wear whatever they want to their job interview when the weather is hot, but beware, this is not the case, and you should still dress professionally, even when it’s scorching!
Job interviews can be stressful and intimidating, and it’s natural to worry about what to wear in front of your potential employer, but equally you might worry about overheating or sweating too much during an interview held in the summer. Here are a few tips to find your way around this problem…
Summer interview clothing for men
Some men have a habit of wearing shorts at the first glimpse of sun, but unless you know your interview will be very informal and held outdoors, resist the urge! You should instead opt for a classic, lightweight suit in neutral and lighter colours or patterns. Avoid wearing heavy fabrics like wool. Instead, choose suits made of materials like cotton that are cooler and more comfortable in the heat. Wearing a tie can also add a dash of professionalism, but if particularly hot you may be able to get away with not wearing one, providing the rest of your outfit says ‘professional’. However, wearing a tie will allow you to wear the same summer suit multiple times yet look to be wearing a different one by simply changing your tie.
Summer interview clothing for women
Women undoubtedly have more options for summer interview clothing than their male counterparts. Cotton trousers and skirts can both be an appropriate choice, however, a light suit or summer dress on the smarter side are also great options. An outfit consisting of an open jacket and either trousers or a skirt will allow you to look professional and keeps you comfortable throughout your interviews. Closed-toe pumps or shoes are a good match for these, but try to avoid sandals or anything that has your toes on show! Finally, keep colours plain rather than too floral or colourful to keep that professional image.
Things to avoid during a job interview in the summer
During a summer interview, t-shirts, denim, open-toed shoes, sandals, and anything too informal, creased, or generally untidy should be avoided. Avoid wearing shorts, yoga pants, leggings, trainers, hoodies, or anything sporty as they will prevent you from looking professional. In addition, try not to overdo it with your makeup, perfume, or jewellery. And if you tend to sweat more in hot weather, make sure you are wearing sufficient anti-perspirant deoderant!
You should also avoid sleeves that are too short, black clothing, as they can attract the heat and make you sweat before your interview and clothes that are too revealing or too tight. Finally, remember to remove sunglasses before you meet your interviewer for the first time, as eye contact is important in making a good first impression.
Knowing what to wear to a job interview in the summer can increase comfort and therefore confidence, and may increase your chances of landing your dream job. Although it may be tempting to dress in unsuitable clothing such as trainers, shorts, or a t-shirt in the summer heat, in most cases doing so would likely make a negative impression on your potential employer.
So, follow the advice above, avoid wearing anything too informal, revealing or flashy, keep away from heat-absorbing black and make sure your hair is neat and you are sufficiently deodorised before attending your interview!
